'Half of Russia's Black Sea fleet's combat jets 'out of operation' '
The Kremlin is now trying to allocate blame and Russian President Vladimir Putin is struggling to hide Ukraine's success from the Russian population as thousands of people fleeing Crimea have streamed into the country, officials have said.'
Ukraine news live: 'Nuclear disaster' fears as Russia tells power plant workers 'to not show up' today; spies' messages reveal major mistake – and how they misled Putin; Crimea blasts spark panic | World News | Sky News
20m ago15:36'If you demilitarise the plant, the problem will be solved', UN chief tells RussiaBy Alistair Bunkall, Sky correspondent in OdesaThe UN secretary general has told Sky News that Russian forces should leave the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant and warned Russia against any attempt to steal Ukrainian electricity.Speaking during a visit to the Ukrainian port city of Odesa, António Guterres said: "If you demilitarise, as we propose, the plant, the problem will be solved."Russia has rejected any suggestion of demilitarisation. The Zaporizhzhia site is the largest nuclear power plant in Europe and has been occupied by Russian military forces since March. It sits right on the southern frontlines. In recent days it has come under shelling with both sides blaming each other. International fears of a nuclear disaster are growing but attempts to get access for independent inspectors have so far failed. On Thursday, Kyiv and Moscow both claimed the other side was planning a "provocation" at the site, and reports emerged that workers at the site had been given an impromptu day off today, raising fears of an attack on the plant.Experts say the risk of an explosion, similar to that at the Ukrainian city of Chernobyl in the 1980s, are extremely low, but the possibility of a radiation leak is concerning if fighting continues. On Friday there were also fresh reports that Russia was preparing to shut down the plant in preparation to connecting it to the Russia power grid. The UN secretary general said that must not happen."Obviously the electricity from Zaporizhzhia is Ukrainian electricity and it's necessary especially during the winter for the Ukrainian people. This principle must be fully respected."Copy link34m ago15:22Crimea blasts had 'major psychological effect on Putin'The recent explosions deep behind Russia's lines in the annexed territory of Crimea have had a major psychological effect on the Russian leadership, Western officials have said. Explosions rocked an air base in Crimea earlier this month, and more blasts were reported in the territory yesterday. Western weapons have enabled Ukrainian forces to target deeper behind Russian lines, reaching into Crimea for the first time. The Kremlin is now trying to allocate blame and Russian President Vladimir Putin is struggling to hide Ukraine's success from the Russian population as thousands of people fleeing Crimea have streamed into the country, officials have said. The attacks have forced the Black Sea fleet into a defensive posture and scuppered Russia's ability to launch an amphibious assault on Odesa on Ukraine's south coast. Meanwhile, the head of the GCHQ intelligence service said Moscow had failed to gain ground in cyberspace against Ukraine.
"So far, President Putin has comprehensively lost the information war in Ukraine and in the West," Sir Jeremy Fleming wrote in an op-ed in The Economist."Just as with its land invasion, Russia's initial online plans appear to have fallen short."Copy link43m ago15:13A snapshot of the scene in eastern UkraineWe reported earlier as an engineering college was targeted by Russian strikes in Kramatorsk, entirely destroying one building at the school. Now, the latest images show children playing in a playground outside a residential building - despite repeated calls for people to evacuate the east.Copy link57m ago14:59Electricity at Russian-held nuclear plant belongs to Ukraine, says UN chiefAntonio Guterres insisted that electricity generated at the Russian-held nuclear power plant in Ukraine's southern region of Zaporizhzhia belongs to Ukraine. The UN secretary-general demanded this principle be "fully respected" after reports Russia planned to cut the power station off from the Ukrainian grid.Mr Guterres told reporters in Ukraine's Black Sea port of Odesa that the plant should be demilitarised. He said: "Obviously the electricity from Zaporizhzhia is Ukrainian electricity and it's necessary especially during the winter for the Ukrainian people. "And this principle must be fully respected."
Copy link1h ago14:47Half of Russia's Black Sea fleet's combat jets 'out of operation'A Western official has said blasts at an air base in annexed Crimea have put more than half of the Russian Black fleet's naval aviation combat jets out of use. Multiple explosions were seen at the Saky air base near Novofedorivka on the west coast of the peninsula earlier this month. "We now assess that the events of Saky airfield on 9 August put more than half of Black Sea fleet's naval aviation combat jets out of use," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.British intelligence also confirmed in a previous update that much of the Russian navy's air capability had been damaged.

UN chief Antonio Guterres visits Odesa port in UkraineCNN's Jorge Engels and Tim ListerUN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visits a port in Odesa, Ukraine on August 19. (Saviano Abreu/UN)US Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday arrived on a visit to the Ukrainian port city of Odesa, a day after holding talks with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Lviv.Pictures provided by the UN show him boarding a cargo ship and inspecting its cargo. After meeting Zelensky and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in the western city of Lviv on Thursday, Guterres said there were signs that
global food markets were beginning to stabilize in the wake of the agreement to provide safe passage for merchant ships from Ukrainian Black Sea ports. "As we speak, more than 560,000 metric tons of grain and other food produced by Ukrainian farmers is making its way to markets around the world," the UN chief said, according to remarks distributed by his office.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres visits a port in Odesa, Ukraine on August 19. (Saviano Abreu/UN)Guterres said that wheat prices dropped by as much as 8% following the signing of the agreement. But he warned that supply chains are still disrupted and energy and transportation costs high.  He said it was "vital to help reverse the turmoil in the global fertilizer market that is now threatening next season’s crops -- including rice, the most widely consumed staple in the world."

Turkey's Erdogan to discuss Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant concerns with PutinFrom CNN's Isil Sariyuce in IstanbulTurkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said Thursday that he will discuss the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant issue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, after holding talks with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in the western Ukrainian city of Lviv.“We will discuss this issue with Mr. Putin, and we will ask him specifically for Russia to do its part in this regard as an important step for world peace,” Erdogan said in an interview with reporters on his flight back from Lviv.Zelensky called for Russia to remove all mines in the area, Erdogan said, according to the text of the interview. Erdogan held trilateral talks in Lviv with the Ukrainian leader and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Erdogan expressed concerns about the ongoing conflict around the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in Ukraine, warning of danger of “a new Chernobyl.” Experts are wary of comparisons to Chernobyl, saying a repeat of the disaster is incredibly unlikely and that the main threat is to the area closest to the plant itself.

Pro-Russian official in Zaporizhzhia rejects UN’s proposal to demilitarize the nuclear plantFrom CNN’s Uliana Pavlova  As Russia and Ukraine blame each other of endangering the safety of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant in central Ukraine, a pro-Russian local official told Russian state news agency that the UN’s proposal to demilitarize the site is “an irresponsible statement.” "This is out of the question. This is an irresponsible statement. A person who either does not understand the risks, or, on the contrary, understands and pushes for tragedy and irreparable consequences, could offer to leave the nuclear power plant unprotected and in danger. Such a statement calls into question the level of competence of the UN Secretary-General," Vladimir Rogov told RIA Novosti.  UN chief Antonio Guterres called for the demilitarization of the vast nuclear plant after meeting Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Lviv on Thursday.  "Further deployment of forces or equipment to the site must be avoided. The area needs to be demilitarized," Guterres said.   Russian military personnel and some equipment have been based at the nuclear plant since it was occupied early in March.

Ukrainian nuclear power operator claims Russians plan to disconnect units at ZaporizhzhiaFrom CNN's Tim Lister and Oleksandra OchmanUkraine's state-run nuclear power operator, Energoatom, is claiming that Russian forces at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant are "planning to stop the working power units in the near future and disconnect them from the communication lines supplying power to the Ukrainian power system."Energoatom's assertion is the latest in a barrage of accusations made by each side about security and military action at and around the plant, the largest nuclear complex in Europe. The lack of independent access to the plant makes it impossible to verify what is happening there. The Ukrainian operator said that "currently, the Russian military is looking for suppliers of fuel for diesel generators, which must be turned on after the shutdown of power units and in the absence of an external power supply for nuclear fuel cooling systems."While pro-Russian officials are on record as saying their intention is to divert electricity produced at Zaporizhzhia to Russian-occupied parts of Ukraine, no timeline for such action has been announced. Energoatom also said that the Russians had told the management of the plant "to limit the admission of personnel to the plant today, August 19. Only operative personnel who ensure the operation of the power units are allowed on the site."An administrative worker at the plant told CNN Friday that "we planned to be at work today but on Thursday evening the manager announced that we are sitting at home." The worker has spoken with CNN on previous occasions; their identity is not being disclosed for their security.Energoatom blamed Russian forces for several artillery strikes that occurred in the area late Thursday. It said the strikes were at short range. CNN is unable to verify what strikes occurred, nor who was responsible. Over the past month, a number of rockets and shells have landed on the territory of the plant, according to satellite imagery analyzed by CNN.

"Ezt az ökörséget baromi egyszerű bizonyítani. Havi számlák és kajavásárlás a boltokban. A németek után már az angolok is erről beszélnek. Azok , akik ezeket ki tudják majd fizetni, azoknak nem marad másra. De a nagyobb baj, hogy egyre többen ezeket sem tudják kifizetni. A svédeknél is baj van. Olvass bele az adott ország lapjaiba. Érdemes."
.
.
Kinek lesz gond  boltban?
