Shares of Sigma Designs Inc. tumbled Tuesday after Robert W. Baird & Co. said the company could lose share in its Internet Protocol television (IPTV) segment as checks indicate Broadcom Corp. won Motorola Inc.'s order for second-generation high-end IPTV set-top boxes.
The stock was down over 21% at $16.32 on volume of 1.5 million shares, and hit a 52-week low of $16.15 intraday. The issue's 30-day average volume is about 3.1 million.
Analyst Tristan Gerra said his checks indicate Broadcom has won Motorola's order for second-generation high-end IPTV set-top boxes for launch in 2009. Motorola generated 23% of Sigma Designs' revenues in fiscal 2008.
As a result, Gerra expects Sigma Designs to lose IPTV share at large telephone companies including AT&T, British Telecom, and KDDI Corp. starting next year.
Gerra said his checks also indicate Sigma Designs could lose "significant" market share at Samsung Corp. for Blu-ray players during the second half of this year because of pricing.
Baird lowered its price target for Sigma Designs to $26 from $30. Shares are rated neutral.
For fiscal 2009, Baird cut its estimates to earnings of $2.40 from $2.50 a share on revenue of $318.3 million from $328 million. The firm lowered its fiscal 2010 forecast to earnings of $2.70 from $2.80 a share on revenue of $388.6 million form $389.9 million.
Analysts polled by Thomson Financial, on average, estimate 2009 earnings of $2.24 a share on revenue of $307.5 million, and 2010 earnings of $2.81 a share on revenue of $394.2 million. Casey Logan cl/vj "
